The classic Old Fashioned

This is class in a glass.  Impress your friends with this classic mainstay.

  • The Old Fashioned cocktail has stood the test of time, dating back to the early 1800s when it was known as the Whiskey Cocktail.  The core components: whiskey, sugar, bitters, and water offer a simple blend of elegance in a glass.

  • During Prohibition, bartenders added extra ingredients like fruit to mask the harsh flavors of bootleg liquor.  Later, discerning customers ordered the unembellished original by asking for an “old-fashioned whiskey cocktail".

  • Please remove its superfluous cherry.

  • Whether enjoyed in its purest form or with a creative spin, the Old Fashioned remains a timeless testament to the enduring appeal of whiskey.

Class in a glass, an Old Fashioned recipe

2.00 oz. rye or bourbon (see note below)

Build this drink in the glass over a single, large rock. Garnish it with an orange peel.

  • This drink lasts about 20 minutes, complexity changes over time as the ice melts and the temperature changes.

  • Equipment: rocks glass, bar spoon, peeler, jiggers

Servings: 1 cocktail

  • Prep Time: 3 mins

NOTE: Bourbon is a little sweeter and smoother. Try Old Forester.  Rye is a little spicier.  We recommend Rendezvous Rye from High West Distillery.
